Athalmere House

Sandy McKay wrote this in Facebook yesterday:

We had a question last week from Patricia Arnold-Pluth of the Toby Benches asking for the background of the old Lakeside Inn. In answer to that question, and in the hopes that others will add their own memories of the Lakeside, here’s what we came up with:
The original Lakeside was built as a private residence in 1913 by James Lorenzo McKay. Most will be familiar with the McKay family already: he’s the original owner of the iconic “Gingerbread House” just north of Radium. For a time James owned the entire Athalmer townsite as well as a number of buildings on it, so when it came time for his children to be closer to better schooling, Athalmer was an obvious choice.
“The McKay House” was built on the lake shore and featured such modern luxuries as steam heating and electric lights. James’ daughter Mary Anne Elizabeth (Marion) recalls how it was “…at one time a beautiful home, with lots of pleasant memories. There were happy times in that house.” Nonetheless, the McKay family only lived there for a short time before moving again for schooling: this time to Victoria.
